The FT ages of two samples taken from the underlying tuff of basalt and the overlying baked conglomoeate
were dated. The first FT age of apatite is 6.79±0.14Ma and the second set of the FT ages of apatite and zircon are 1.48±0.46Ma and 1.68±0.12Ma respectively. Therefore
the late eruption of the basalt was considered to approximately corresponding to the lower boundary of the Quaternary Period
i
e. about 1.8 Ma BP. The FT dating in the Penglai Peninsula thus provided strong evidence to discuss the age of the lower boundary of Quaternary Period in China.
